How we became who we are<\/h2>\n

It all started with the realization that non-profit organizations need a specific kind of consulting. With this idea in mind, Rudi Piwko founded SOCIUS in 1998 as a non-profit corporation supported by the legendary inventor, Prof. Artur Fischer. In this initial stage, practical tasks such as \u00a0fundraising and public relations were the main focus. With the help of the Theodor Heuss Foundation (Hildegard Hamm-Br\u00fccher), the Robert Bosch Foundation and Stiftung Mitarbeit, SOCIUS undertook its first consulting projects in Germany and Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n

As our team expanded – Christian Baier and Andreas Knoth \u00a0joined in 2002, and Nicola Kriesel and Kerstin Engelhardt in 2005 – we were able to extend our services to include more process-oriented topics such as team development and mediation. In 2009, our legal status was adjusted to reflect our expanding structure; all our consultants became co-owners of the non-profit limited liability company (gGmbH). This increased stability fuelled the idea of initiating SOCIUS spin-offs under the umbrella of the newly established legal form, the SOCIUS cooperative. Hence, in 2010 new branches were founded in Hamburg, Cologne and Munich.<\/p>\n

However, after three years, we concluded that this ambitious plan had overstrained our capacities and that the key element of our collective efforts – \u00a0personal relationships and exchange – could not be scaled up indefinitely. Whilst we maintain professionally connected to our colleagues across Germany, we have now shifted our focus to the sustainable organic growth of our Berlin team. Since 2005, SOCIUS has provided trainees and interns with a professional home and learning space, and this will continue for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

In 2010, Ralph Piotrowski, Joana Ebbinghaus and Britta Loschke joined the team bringing with them additional competencies and new perspectives. At the same time, a generation change took place as Andreas Knoth and Christian Baier became the new managers of SOCIUS, taking over from founder Rudi Piwko. This development, like most of the processes we support, required a mixture of respect for history and an orientation towards the capacity to act within new structures. The SOCIUS cooperative, as a political model of equal co-determination, constitutes the main compass and framework for the internal development of our cooperation. It provides scope for further development from the pioneering phase towards a model in which all stake-holders jointly assume responsibility and define their roles.<\/p>\n

In slow \u2018organic\u2019 cycles, SOCIUS has developed into a robust and consistent organization without losing any of its dynamism or agility. A mix of public tenders, self-initiated development processes, active acquisitions, as well as both tailor-made and open-entry training courses have ensured a healthy balance of work, both in terms of content and financial stability.<\/p>\n

Our changes in location have also reflected our organization\u2019s growth. So far, we have moved to new premises every eight years: our first office in Charlottenburg was 70sqm (1998-2006). We doubled our office space when we moved across the street in 2014. Now, we breathe life into a spacious 220sqm of centrally located office space next to the Landwehr canal in Kreuzberg. Our seminar rooms and lounge with a wood-burning stove provide an inspiring ambience for professional exchange and social encounters.<\/p>\n

We have a continuing \u2018desire for development\u2019 and wish to expand moderately by incorporating two or three new colleagues and exploring new working forms and fields. In addition, SOCIUS regularly offers trainee positions. Our current trainee, Simon Mohn, complements our team through his endeavors to experiment with different media and means of presentation.<\/p>\n

Wie wir wurden was wir sind<\/h2>

Am Anfang stand die Erkenntnis, dass gemeinn\u00fctzige Organisationen eine eigene und spezifische Art von \"Unternehmensberatung\" ben\u00f6tigen. Mit dieser Idee gr\u00fcndete Rudi Piwko 1998 mit Unterst\u00fctzung des legend\u00e4ren Erfinders Prof. Artur Fischer SOCIUS als gemeinn\u00fctzige GmbH. Konkrete Bedarfe wie Fundraising und \u00d6ffentlichkeitsarbeit standen in dieser Anfangszeit im Zentrum. Mit Hilfe der Theodor Heuss Stiftung (Hildegard Hamm-Br\u00fccher), der Robert Bosch Stiftung und der Stiftung Mitarbeit wurden in den Anfangsjahren erste Beratungsprojekte national und in Osteuropa durchgef\u00fchrt.<\/p>

Gemeinsam mit Christian Baier und Andreas Knoth (Einstieg 2002) sowie Nicola Kriesel und Kerstin Engelhardt (Einstieg 2005) wurde das Angebot ausgeweitet auf st\u00e4rker prozessorientierte Themen wie Teamentwicklung und Mediation. In 2009 bekam die gewachsene Struktur auch eine neue juristische Basis, indem alle Beraterinnen und Berater auch Gesellschafter*innen der gGmbH wurden.<\/p>

In der zunehmenden Stabilisierung entstand die Idee, unter dem Dach der 2010 gegr\u00fcndeten socius Genossenschaft in Hamburg, K\u00f6ln und M\u00fcnchen weitere gemeinn\u00fctzige SOCIUS Gesellschaften entstehen zu lassen. Mit diesem ambitionierten Plan hatten wir uns allerdings \u00fcberfordert und mussten nach drei Jahren gemeinsam res\u00fcmieren, dass sich die Schl\u00fcsselzutat unseres Zusammenwirkens, der pers\u00f6nliche kollegiale Kontakt, nicht beliebig skalieren l\u00e4\u00dft. Wir bleiben partnerschaftlich mit unseren ehemaligen Mitstreiter*innen verbunden, setzen aber nun auf ein nachhaltiges organisches Wachstum im Berliner Team. Hier haben seit 2005 immer wieder auch Praktikant*innen und Trainees f\u00fcr absehbare Zeit eine berufliche Heimat und Lernr\u00e4ume gefunden.<\/p>

Mit Ralph Piotrowski, Joana Ebbinghaus und Britta Loschke kamen seit 2010 in den Folgejahren weitere Kolleg*innen mit entsprechenden weiteren Kompetenzen und Perspektiven ins Team. Zugleich fand unter der Folie des \u201eGenerationswechsels\u201c die \u00dcbergabe der Gesch\u00e4ftsf\u00fchrung vom Gr\u00fcnder Rudi Piwko auf Andreas Knoth und Christian Baier statt. Eine Entwicklung , die \u00a0- wie die meisten Prozessen, die wir begleiten \u2013 eine Mischung aus Respekt vor der Historie und Orientierung auf Handlungsf\u00e4higkeit in neuen Strukturen erfordert. Die SOCIUS Genossenschaft bildet dabei als politisches Modell gleichberechtigter Mitbestimmung den pr\u00e4gende Kompass und Rahmen der inneren Ausgestaltung unseres Zusammenwirkens. Sie gibt Raum f\u00fcr die weitere Entwicklung von der Pionierphase zu einem Modell, in dem alle Beteiligten gemeinsam Verantwortung und Gestaltungsrollen \u00fcbernehmen.<\/p>

In langsamen \u201ebiologischen\u201c Zyklen hat sich SOCIUS so zu einer gesunden und f\u00fcr uns in sich stimmigen Organisation entwickelt, ohne an Dynamik und Agilit\u00e4t zu verlieren. Der Auftragsmix aus \u00f6ffentlichen Ausschreibungen, freien Entwicklungsprozessen und eigenen sowie \u00fcbernommenen Veranstaltungen und Fortbildungen sichert ein sowohl inhaltlich als auch finanziell ausgewogenes Agieren.<\/p>

Das Wachstum zeigt sich auch in unseren Umz\u00fcgen. Alle acht Jahre ging es in neue R\u00e4ume: vom Ladenb\u00fcro in Charlottenburg auf 70qm 1998-2006, in die B\u00fcroetage 140qm gegen\u00fcber bis 2014. Heute beleben wir 220qm zentral am Landwehrkanal in Kreuzberg mit Seminarr\u00e4umen und Kaminofen-Lounge, die ein fruchtbares Ambiente f\u00fcr fachlichen Austausch und soziale Begegnung schafft.<\/p>

Wir haben weiter \"Lust auf Entwicklung\" und wollen gem\u00e4\u00dfigt um zwei, drei weitere Kolleg*innen wachsen und neue Arbeitsfelder und \u2013formen erkunden. \u00a0Daneben hat SOCIUS seit 2017 erstmalig einen Ausbildungsplatz: Hanna Kulik ist Auszubildende zur Veranstaltungskauffrau (IHK).
